Book Review: Perspectives In Action by David Chelsea

In a cool comic book style format, professional commercial artist David Chelsea simplifies and explains dimension and depth in his excellent new book Perspective In Action. While geared toward the amateur artist, there is a wealth of information in this book that novices and professionals alike can borrow from to hone their skills. I know I will be referencing it often in the future. A valued addition to my collection.

Flagstaff Parking Meter Boycott Gains Traction

Flagstaff’s new parking meters, scheduled to activate in the downtown area on August 1st, are facing renewed opposition from locals who are calling for a boycott of the kiosks. Boycott literature appearing on cars parked around town this week expresses concerns about employees, residents and small businesses who will be unjustly impacted by the new pay to park system.

Comments on the Park Flag facebook page are calling this new system “double taxation” since Flagstaff residents already pay for local roads through several City taxes, including a special sales tax approved by voters a few years ago.

A PDF of the boycott literature can be viewed here: Boycott PDF

Book Review: Foundations Of Drawing

Art books are a dime a dozen and it is hard to find a stand out volume covering history, tools, techniques and/or styles. Unfortunately, Foundations of Drawing by Al Gury is no exception. While it does offer very brief chapters on a wide variety of drawing topics, it is not much more than an introductory book to a lot of different concepts and ideas. Worth flipping through but not for the serious artist.

Book Review: Manga Art By Mark Crilley

I have to be honest, when Manga Art by Mark Crilley shipped to me I half expected to receive a dud based on the description and cover art. Well, let me tell you, never judge a book by it’s cover. Once you get past the cliche first impression and into the following pages, prepare to be amazed, impressed and inspired. Manga taking it’s cue from classic pulp fiction art, realistic looking manga, and my personal favorite (page 113), a manga version of the Statue Of Liberty. Beautiful. Mark Crilley is a genius.
